Update from Mrs. Chen

This year, on November 8th, it will be the last time there will be a poll working opportunity. After this election, there will be no polling places, it being replaced by vote centers.

ROV will be doing a voting education event. Please contact the ROV or go onto their website for more information. 

Due to the Motor Voter Registration, registering people through walk the precinct will no longer be necessary. Instead, walk the precinct will focus on a more educational aspect. Details will be confirmed later.

We will be using Google Hangouts as our messaging system. Please reply to the Hangouts invitation Albert sent out. If you haven't recieved an invitation, please email Albert for an invitation. Emails are also a main way of communication. Please check them regularly.

If you are not going to be present at the meeting, you must email ahead of time with a legitimate reason, which, if the reason makes  sense, will excuse you.

Elections: 

Candidates for Treasurer were asked to stand up and present their short speech to the present members.

Elections were held through an anonymous ballot.

The treasurer for the 2016-2017 year was voted to be Veronica Morad.

Some officer positions were rearranged and positions were finalized.

Publication Review:The remainder of the meeting time was reviewing the publication. 

The first publication has already been printed and was passed out at the meeting.

Goals for the next publication and any small details to take note of were established through the review of the first publication

Guest Speakers

VIAN invited guest speakers Gang Chen and Sukhee Kang to come in and talk to the members of VIAN. Gang Chen came in at the very beginning of the meeting and Sukhee Kang's campaign manager came in at the end of the meeting.

Members were encouraged to ask questions.

Expenses

OC Register flyer money was collected.

The rocket team, including members Albert and Shannon, won 5th place in the national competition and helped gain money for VIAN.

Publication will be printed.

Howard has prepared an outline for the publication.

VIAN is looking into including ads into the publication.

Since the making of VIAN, board member positions have been selected on a free for all basis. Soon, there will be elections for board member positions and the free or all selections will be closed.

Mock Elections 

Irvine High School is planning a mock election in September.

Woodbridge High School and Sage Hill School are looking into mock elections at the schools.

Over the Summer

Megan V., VIAN Community Service Coordinator, is contacted the Incredible Edible Farm for an opportunity to volunteer there over the summer.Possible communication methods include Google Hangouts, MySpace, and LINE.


Taking Action

VIAN is considering offering volunteer services to all candidates. Those who volunteer will be doing it as individuals, but VIAN will be providing opportunities to volunteer.

VIAN is also considering to become a nonpartisan media source.

President Albert suggested creating a clutter free email to better organize and recognize important incoming emails.

Measure E:

​Measure E is a bond that will help IUSD collect money. It mainly affects the residents and students of Irvine. Their goal is to upgrade schools and increase student education efficiency.

VIAN will be volunteering as a group and assist with phone banking. VIAN will remain nonpartisan and will pull out if the volunteering event starts pushing for one side. Individuals are allowed to express their own opinions on the event, but VIAN as a whole will not take part and the volunteering must be done as an individual.

    • Voter must turn in form 15 days before the primary election

    • No preference voters will receive a choice of the open parties and are allowed to select one party to vote for. 

      • The 2016 parties are the American Independent Party, Libertarian Party, and the Democratic Party

    • If the voter wants to do vote-by-mail, they have to initial in the section that state that.

    • Voter must sign and date the registration form or it will not be accepted.

    • The CA License vs the last four digits of the SSN - only one is needed.

Walk the Precinct Training

  • Decide on a time

  • Have volunteers sign up

  • Divide the volunteers into small groups

    • One adult chaperone

    • 4-5 students

  • Decide on area and have maps for each group

  • Train all volunteers on the walking before heading out

  • Train volunteers on how to talk to the residents

  • Hand out maps, registration forms, record forms, and talking points flyers

  • Regroup after the walk and collect the registration forms and record forms

  • Discuss experiences after the walk

Safety Training

  • One adult chaperone per group

  • Chaperone needs to stay with the group at all times

  • Never enter the house

  • Don't put anything inside the mailbox

    • It belongs to the government, not the homeowner

  • Don't eat or drink anything offered by residents

  • Stay with the group and never act alone

March 26, 2016, 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm: Walk the Precinct

VIAN/VIA is offering a walk the precinct door to door voter registration drive in UC Irvine areas. We will be meeting in front of Peet's Coffee & Tea at University Tower in 4199 Campus Dr., Irvine, CA 92612 at 3 pm. The fun and adventurous day will start with voter registration and safety training, then, students and parent chaperones will be assigned to nearby communities, and conclude with a group sharing. All volunteer students will receive Community Services hours for the time served. See flyer here.

Currently, the back of the VIAN T-Shirt is blank.

The empty space on the back will be left for sponsors.

Walk the Precinct

Frequency: 2 weeks - 1 Month

Currently, WtP is always held on a Saturday. 

A strong cause needs to be present to bring more people in.

Each WtP needs to be unique.

Possible cities:

  • Tustin

  • Yorba Linda

  • Irvine

Teams will be decided when they sign in at the beginning of the event.

  • There can only be a maximum of 6 people per team.

- Don't read off a script.

- Don't step on other people's lawns.

- Don't be too close to the doors.

- Don't trespass.

- Be polite.

Board Member Attendance

Board members are allowed to miss 3 consecutive board meetings.

If you are not going to be present at the meeting, you must email ahead of time with a legitimate reason, which, if the reason makes  sense, will excuse you.

If you are not present at the meeting, the meeting minutes must be viewed. Then you must offer opinions about the meeting.

For far away members, VIAN is considering using webcams to communicate.

If you have to leave early, you must stay for a minimum of 30 minutes.

Next meeting is scheduled on 3/27/2016 (Sunday) at 4:00pm. It may be adjusted

No rallies may be attended.

VIAN has to remain as politically neutral as possible.

Woodbridge HS, Irvine HS, University HS, and Sage Hill HS have a VIA club set up in school. Trabuco Hills HS's club deadline has already passed, so they cannot set up a club there. Northwood is currently working on getting a VIA club set up.
